The HP LaserJet 5000 printer is a business printer that uses black and white HP LaserJet 5000 Laser Toner. It is network capable and has standard wireless printing. This makes it convenient for placement in the office and is compatible with Windows and Macintosh due to the Apple LaserWriter drive.

The warm up time for printing takes about 12.2 seconds. Once it is going, it will give high quality 1200 dots per inch printing and is quite capable of giving professional quality business cards. The duty cycle per month is 65,000 pages. This will not always be needed but it is good to know it can deliver when business is heavy or there is a heavy promotional period. There does not need to be a lot of HP LaserJet Bulk Toner on hand because a high yield cartridge is included. It will print out 10,000 pages before needing to be replaced.

It comes out of the box with a 250 sheet standard paper tray and a multipurpose tray is also included. This tray holds up to 100 sheets bringing the paper capacity up to 350 sheets of paper. There are two out put trays. One holds 250 pages and the other prints face up and holds 50 pages and there is a sensor indicating when the bins are full.

There is an optional duplex tray available. For an office that does a lot of two sided printing, this can be a real time saver. If paper is being refilled frequently, there are two other paper trays available. One will hold 250 sheets and the other holds 500 sheets. The maximum number of trays that it can hold is four. With a 500 sheet bin, the total output capacity without adding more paper is 850 sheets.

When new business cards are needed, these can be printed in house. This printer can work with regular paper up to card stock of 53 lbs. The card stock will need to go through the multipurpose tray since it has straight through printing. The size may be as large as 11 x 17 and as small as 3 x 5 inches. Besides business cards, it will also print labels and transparencies.

The standard memory is 4MB of RAM but can be expanded to 164 MB. Three additional DIMM slots are available for memory expansion. The memory comes in 4, 6, 8, 16, and 32 MB. The processor is a 100 MHz RISC microprocessor. The expanded memory and processor allows for faster printing on a network. The enhanced I/O card on the HP Jetdirect 600n allows for speedy network printing.

The printer is able to sit on a desktop if necessary. It is 19.1 inches in width, 19 inches in length and 12.8 inches in height and weighs 46 pounds. The size is convenient but at this weight, a printer cart may be needed. In addition to the slots for RAM memory expansion, there is flash memory at 2 to 4 MB. These hold memory permanently even when the printer is off. There is a parallel IEEE1284 port and a 232C serial port to connect it to the computer.

An HP LaserJet 5000 printer is just right for a small or home business. What is best about it would be the ability to save money. Every business needs letter head and business cards. If these items are done monochrome, this printer will do both with great quality. Savings will be found with the HP LaserJet 5000 Laser Toners as well, since it comes standard with one that prints 10,000 pages.
